Have you heard the good news? April is Earth Month! If you’ve been interested in learning more about sustainability, now’s the perfect time. But before you jump in, you might want to know a little bit more about the origins of Earth Month, so we’ve got you covered. We did a little digging (pun intended) and found out the fascinating history of Earth Day!
The Origins of Earth Day
Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970, as a way to direct the nation’s attention to the state of the environment. His goal was to persuade politicians that the public would support an environmental movement. And the public did not disappoint! On April 22, 1970, an estimated 20 million people across the country celebrated the first Earth Day. We’d call that a huge success! Just a few months later in July of 1970, President Nixon proposed the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (or the EPA) and on December 2, 1970, it began operation.
Fast forward to today, and Earth Day has not only grown in cultural importance, but has broadened into Earth Month, and we’re all for it. After all, why celebrate our planet for just one day when we could celebrate for thirty?
How Can Small Businesses Get Involved?
It’s important to consider your impact on the environment all year round, but this month can give you a boost! “Going green” can be more than a trend for businesses and entrepreneurs—it’s an opportunity to improve operations, connect with customers, and stand out in a crowded market. Here are some simple ways your business can make a difference this Earth Month:
1. Make Your Operations More Eco-Friendly
Start by evaluating your energy use, waste, and materials. Switch to energy-efficient lighting, reduce paper use, and consider digital options for records and communication. These small changes can save you money and help reduce your environmental footprint. Check out some ways we’ve done this at Riveo Creative by downloading our most recent Impact Report!
2. Source Sustainably
Consider supporting local and sustainable suppliers. Whether you’re buying materials or products, sourcing responsibly can reduce your carbon footprint and show customers that your business values eco-friendly practices.
3. Get Involved Locally
Earth Month is a great time to engage with your community. Host an Earth Day event, participate in a local cleanup, or sponsor a tree-planting initiative. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you’ll also raise your business profile and connect with others who care about sustainability.
4. Highlight Eco-Friendly Products or Services
If your business offers sustainable products or services, Earth Month is the perfect time to promote them! Whether it’s recyclable packaging, locally sourced products, or green services, let your customers know how you’re helping the planet.
5. Spread the Word
Use your marketing platforms to share your sustainability efforts. Whether it’s social media, newsletters, or in-store signage, let your customers know you’re committed to making a positive environmental impact. This not only builds loyalty but also attracts eco-conscious consumers.
Why It Matters
Being eco-friendly will help you build a brand that resonates with today’s consumers. More and more people are choosing businesses that align with their values, and showing your commitment to sustainability can attract new customers and strengthen your brand.
Sen. Nelson once said, “So long as the human species inhabits the Earth, proper management of its resources will be the most fundamental issue we face.” Simply put – how we treat the planet we live on matters! So this Earth Month, take the opportunity to review your business’s practices, make small changes, and celebrate the positive impact you can have. Remember, every little action counts in creating a more sustainable future!
